Happy Mother’s Day and congrats to everyone for running a really good BarCampKC this year. My favorite moments were listening to Tom state his strong opinions. clearly. and seeing Blaine’s eyes light up every time he got to either hear or utter a sentence that included the word “Smalltalk”.

What the hell is brightkite? You kids and your new-fangled web sites. This geezer can no longer keep up…

And let’s not forget the music donated by none other than 1,000,000 Light Years. Patrick came on short notice and even sat in on many of the sessions. Check out his band 4th of July that even played CMJ and everything. Btw, the recording label, Range Life Records is run by his older brother.

The only crappy thing about the camp was realizing I met Jon Crawford a month too late. He talked with me about his plans to start something like a refresh Kansas City which I’d never heard of but was thrilled to learn about. Not only do I think it’s a really good idea but I think “refresh Kansas City” sounds way less awkward than “BarCampKC” and might attract more folks. The refreshes meet more often, too. In fact maybe the folks who go to the monthly refreshes could be the same folks who gradually put together an annual barcamp, democamp, or whatever. That could be fun.

There was also talk of doing something in conjunction with Omaha and perhaps other places to create a larger event. Ambitious? yes. But could be great…

Oh and, like I moron, I left the signin sheet (the one with all your email addresses on it) at Ad Astra. I was in a hurry to get Patrick back to Lawrence and then make it back for dinner with my family but in any case apologies for that gaffe and I’m going to try to track it down.

We need someone who can facilitate the morning “penciling in” of sessions for Saturday — in essence someone who is willing to do three things:

• bring a big sheet or roll of poster paper and a couple markers
• listen to the people/group(s) who call out when and what they want to present in which room
• write down sessions as they are negotiated to finally come up with the day’s schedule.

Anyone? Please comment here. It can be a group effort (a few people up front manning the schedule) and especially if you’re not presenting a session it’s a way to lend your talents to the effort.

If it’s not you, maybe you know someone coming who is attending and could do this, pass the word…

Nothing directly to do with BarCampKC but kind of neat — OldTimeRadioFans.com archives some CBS Radio Mystery Theater shows from 1974. Cool thing is the first three feature a newscast from WDAF when the station was “affiliated with all four major networks of the time: NBC, CBS, ABC, and DuMont”.

I fired up audacity and spliced out the newscast from the first featured episode, here’s a quick list of highlights:

It’s the smallest positive integer requiring four syllables to name in English and also the number of folks I currently have on record as planning to attend.

Just let me know if I should add you to the list…much over the mid 30s and I should probably check with Ad Astra about any space concerns.

Update: Ariel informed me this evening that the KC bloggers panel is still in the works, numbering in the range of 4-5 additional people. Hope it works out.

A TechMonkey twitter alerted me to the existence of linuxchic’s recent interview with TechRepublic. Her first computer? A Commodore 64. (Mine was a TI-99/4A, though I did graduate to a C64 eventually).

Among other interesting tidbits, check out the interview to learn more about the AlternaGeek site and even hear Christa generously namedrop BarCampKC.

Also, the interview reminded me of the time about 10 years ago that I and a few other co-workers were proud to get a i386 running Slackware on our employer’s Banyan token ring network…good times…
