Please thank Sierra Nitz for our slick new logo — coming soon to a t-shirt, mug, or other suitable barcampkc schwag item near you. When will you have an opportunity to thank Sierra, you ask? Yep, at barcampkc. She’ll be there.

Nara-ly Space for Friday

We’ve got the little lounge area at Nara reserved for a couple hours starting at 6pm-ish on Friday May 9.

General Manager Marco is waving the customary $250.00 weekend night minimum tab in exchange for the fact that we’ll wait for anyone seated in the lounge before 6 to leave the area before grabbing the table(s) we need. This is as opposed to Nara having to stop seating the area for us around 4:30 which is expensive for them. And we should probably try to clear out around 8 — campers still lingering can always spill out into the main bar area.

If someone has a different Friday venue they’d like to suggest instead we can cancel this one so just say the word.

Here’s a map. See you there!

We’re not doing too bad compared to the tried but true 10 pieces of advice from Clever, Clever Girl but we are missing the all-important T-Shirt Master. Oh and we should also probably have a non-sucking logo — in fact if we had a decent logo someone could probably just go to Zazzle or CafePress and “make” a shirt.

(not feeling) Randy

Just got word that Randy Rice in Oklahoma City will not be able to join us due to new commitments related to a project in Dallas. It’s too bad because I know he had at least one cool session planned involving the government’s repurposing of gaming technology to various ends. Hopefully we’ll catch him at the next event.

Also, when Randy mentioned he was sorry to have to miss it, I did point out that AlternaGeek Tech Show have generously offered to record the sessions so at least he’ll get an inkling of what he missed once the files are published to the web. And not only are the sessions being recorded, my understanding is they’ll be streamed live during the event as well.

Very cool!

Socks

It’s exciting to see Ariel over at BitterSweetLife helping us get the word out about BarCampKC. Ariel’s leading an effort to assemble a panel of area bloggers for our edification and enjoyment. If it does come together I think we’ll all be in for an out-of-the-ordinary treat, even relative to barcamps, since typically you only get to learn from the hardcore bloggers at an event similar to PodCampMidWest.

The only dissettling aspect of Ariel’s post is to see myself referred to as a “coordinator”. I typically have difficulty coordinating my socks each morning so to stop and regard myself as coordinating barcampkc seems strange until I recall that the main coordination of these things actually takes place through blogs, wikis, emails, etc. with serious help from all of you. So with that in mind, Ariel’s post reminds me to thank everyone who has been helping and plans to help out!

KC Java, Omahaian Tesla

I went to the KCJava meeting last night at Centriq and saw Jon Brisbin speak about Ext Js 2.0. It was a good overview with plenty of comparison to other options like JQuery and Dojo. Good discussion and we hope we see some KCJava members at BarCampKC…

Also, on the heels of learning of Scott Hickey’s plans to head down from the Omaha area, we learned we’ll also be graced with the presence of Samuel Tesla. If you poke around his site a bit we think you’ll agree we’re fortunate to have him! Samuel has offered to speak on Lisp, Erlang, his experience with Agile projects, plus other possible topics.

We’re looking forward to not only meeting Scott, Samuel, and other friends from up North, but also perhaps getting some of these folks on a couple ad-hoc panels with other out of town participants like Tom Mornini.
